Top 10 Bowman Chrome 1st Bowman Autograph Cards
The ten Bowman Chrome 1st Bowman autograph cards that define modern prospecting — ranked by player trajectory, parallel scarcity, and long-term market performance.
The Bowman Chrome 1st Bowman autograph is the single most important card type in the modern hobby. It is the rookie card before the rookie card — the first officially-licensed, on-card auto of a prospect, typically issued while they are still in the minor leagues. For the stars who pan out, the 1st Bowman Chrome auto becomes the card collectors chase for the rest of that player’s career. For the prospects who don’t, it’s a $5 reminder that prospecting is hard.
Our ranking weights player trajectory (established MLB production or elite prospect status), the base-card population relative to demand, and historical price performance in the graded market. We focus on the base 1st Bowman Chrome auto as the baseline card, noting where Refractor and parallel premiums dramatically change the math. These are the ten 1st Bowman Chrome autographs that define modern prospecting.
1. Shohei Ohtani — 2018 Bowman Chrome 1st Bowman Auto #BCMA-SO
The single most valuable modern Bowman Chrome auto, driven by Ohtani’s unprecedented two-way dominance, his 2024 Dodgers World Series run, and the fact that he has no earlier Topps-licensed minor-league cards. PSA 10 base autos have cleared $20,000; Refractors and colored parallels multiply from there. The SuperFractor 1/1 has sold at $500,000+.
This is the blue-chip anchor of any modern prospecting portfolio. As long as Ohtani plays, this card goes up.
2. Ronald Acuña Jr. — 2018 Bowman Chrome 1st Bowman Auto #BCMA-RA
Acuña’s 2023 40/70 season and his status as the face of the NL have kept demand for his 1st Bowman auto elite. PSA 10 base autos trade from $4,000 to $8,000; Refractors in the five figures; the SuperFractor above $100,000.
One of the safer long-term holds on this list — Acuña is 28 years old, under contract in Atlanta, and his card has survived multiple hobby corrections without breaking down.
3. Mike Trout — 2009 Bowman Chrome Draft 1st Bowman Auto #BDPP89
The original modern 1st Bowman anchor, before Bowman Chrome prospecting had even fully matured into its current form. Trout’s PSA 10 base auto trades from $4,000 to $10,000 depending on the month; the Orange Refractor /25 and SuperFractor 1/1 are six-figure cards on any given day.
The hobby’s benchmark for what a generational 1st Bowman auto looks like. A PSA 10 Trout 1st Bowman should be in every collection that can afford one.
4. Juan Soto — 2018 Bowman Chrome 1st Bowman Auto #BCMA-JS
Soto’s move to the Yankees in 2024 and his subsequent record free-agent contract have only reinforced his status. PSA 10 base autos sit in the $2,000-5,000 range; Refractors from $5,000 up; the Gold Refractor /50 consistently trades in five figures.
At 27 years old with a decade-plus of elite production ahead of him, Soto’s card has one of the strongest long-term trajectories on this list.
5. Fernando Tatis Jr. — 2017 Bowman Chrome 1st Bowman Auto #BCMA-FT
Tatis’ trajectory has been choppier than the others on this list — injuries, a PED suspension, inconsistent production — but he remains a franchise face and his 1st Bowman auto has held up. PSA 10 base autos trade from $800 to $2,500; Refractors from $2,500 up.
Lower floor than the top four, but higher upside if he puts together a sustained healthy run. A classic volatility pick.
6. Aaron Judge — 2014 Bowman Chrome Draft 1st Bowman Auto #BCA-AJ
Judge’s record-breaking 2022 AL HR season and his 2024 AL MVP have cemented him as a Yankee cornerstone. PSA 10 base autos have cleared $3,000-6,000; Refractors in the $8,000+ range.
Judge’s age (mid-30s by now) is the risk factor — less remaining career than the 25-year-olds on this list. But the historical weight of his records keeps demand durable.
7. Kris Bryant — 2013 Bowman Chrome Draft 1st Bowman Auto #BCA-KB
The cautionary 1st Bowman auto on this list. Bryant’s 2016 NL MVP and Cubs World Series run briefly put his card at Trout-tier prices. Injuries and declining production since have cut PSA 10 base auto prices from $2,000+ peaks to the $400-900 range today.
Included here because every serious prospecting collector should understand both the ceiling and the floor. Bryant’s card is a reminder that MVP seasons and championship rings don’t guarantee long-term card appreciation.
8. Paul Skenes — 2023 Bowman Chrome 1st Bowman Auto #BCP-PS
The most recent addition to the blue-chip tier. Skenes’ 2024 NL Rookie of the Year, his first full dominant season, and the fact that he’s the best pitching prospect since Strasburg have driven his 1st Bowman auto up sharply. PSA 10 base autos have cleared $2,000-4,000; Refractors in the $5,000+ range.
Highest variance pick on the list — pitcher injury risk is real and historically has crushed the card values of even elite pitching prospects. But the ceiling here is enormous.
9. Bobby Witt Jr. — 2019 Bowman Chrome 1st Bowman Auto #BCMA-BWJ
Witt’s 2024 MVP-caliber season in Kansas City and his 30/30 upside profile have moved his 1st Bowman auto into the upper tier. PSA 10 base autos trade from $1,000 to $3,000; Refractors from $3,000 up.
One of the best combinations of age, production, and parallel scarcity on the current market. A strong core holding for a modern prospecting portfolio.
10. Elly De La Cruz — 2022 Bowman Chrome 1st Bowman Auto #BCP-EDLC
The highest-speculation pick on the list. Elly’s rare combination of power, speed, and range has collectors betting on a Hall of Fame ceiling. PSA 10 base autos have swung from $500 to $2,500 depending on his monthly output; Refractors are volatile multiples of that.
For believers, worth owning. For skeptics, worth waiting for another full season of sustained production. Either way, one of the more interesting cards in the hobby right now.
How to Buy These Cards
eBay is the primary secondary market for raw and graded 1st Bowman autos — population is deep enough that prices move in real time and comps are easy to establish. For PSA 10 examples above $3,000, auction houses (Goldin, PWCC, Heritage) run weekly auctions where serious buyers and sellers transact. For sealed Bowman product where these cards originally come from, Bowman Chrome hobby boxes are the primary draw vehicle.
Check the PSA population report before buying anything above $1,000. For high-end Refractors and colored parallels, also check the Beckett and SGC populations — not all the supply lives in PSA holders, and an apparent PSA scarcity can disappear when you include the other grading companies.
What We’d Avoid
1st Bowman autos of prospects who haven’t yet been promoted past AA. Prospect-risk rates are brutal — most top-100 prospects never become league-average MLB players, let alone stars. If you’re building a portfolio (not speculating), wait for AAA promotion or MLB debut. You’ll pay more, but you’ll pay for something real.
Also avoid heavily-trimmed-looking raw examples being sold as “mint” from unfamiliar sellers. Bowman Chrome is condition-sensitive, and the gap between a genuinely pack-fresh card and a carefully handled one is real. When in doubt, buy graded.
