A Young Franchise with One of the Hobby’s Most Iconic Cards
The Seattle Mariners were founded in 1977 as an American League expansion franchise, entering the same year as the Toronto Blue Jays. The Mariners played their first decade without a winning season, became contenders in the 1990s with Ken Griffey Jr., Randy Johnson, Edgar Martinez, and Alex Rodriguez, and produced the greatest regular season in AL history with their 116-win 2001 team (tied with the 1906 Cubs for the single-season record). Despite that resume, the Mariners are the only current MLB franchise that has never played in a World Series.
For collectors, the Mariners punch far above their on-field history. The 1989 Upper Deck Griffey Jr. rookie is arguably the most significant modern card ever printed — the card that launched Upper Deck and the premium card era. Ichiro Suzuki’s 2001 rookie class is another high-demand population. The current Julio Rodríguez era has added another franchise-anchor prospect card, and the Mariners’ strong recent drafts have created one of the more active prospect markets in the AL West.
This page walks through Mariners cards by era and lays out collecting strategies for building a Seattle PC.

Featured Mariners Players
The players below have their own deep-dive guides on Baseball Cards. Each player page covers the full card catalog, key rookies, parallels to chase, and buying tips.
How to Build a Mariners PC
Budget collector ($50-$500 total): Current-year Bowman and Topps Chrome hobby boxes cover the Julio Rodríguez-Raleigh-Crawford core. Add PSA 9 copies of the 1989 Fleer, Donruss, and Score Griffey rookies, a raw 1989 Upper Deck Griffey (or a PSA 8), and a PSA 10 2001 Topps Ichiro. A $500 build yields 60-80 Mariners cards with multiple Hall of Fame rookies.
Mid-budget collector ($500-$5,000): Target a PSA 10 1989 Upper Deck Griffey, a PSA 10 2001 Bowman Chrome Ichiro, and a PSA 10 2020 Bowman Chrome Julio Rodríguez 1st Bowman Auto. A PSA 8 1994 SP A-Rod rounds out the vintage-modern side.
High-end collector ($5,000+): A PSA 10 Black Label 1989 Upper Deck Griffey, a PSA 10 2001 SP Authentic Ichiro Auto, and a PSA 10 Rodríguez 1st Bowman Auto are the three-card franchise anchor. Complete PSA 10 runs of the five Griffey 1989 rookies (Upper Deck, Fleer, Donruss, Score, Bowman) are a popular grail among Mariners collectors.
