The T206 Wagner Franchise
The Pittsburgh Pirates have something no other franchise has: the T206 Honus Wagner. The most famous baseball card in the world is a Pirates card, featuring the Pirates shortstop who refused to let American Tobacco use his likeness to sell cigarettes. Fewer than 60 confirmed copies exist across all grades, and a single PSA 5 example sold for $7.25 million in 2022.
Beyond the Wagner, the Pirates catalog runs deep. Roberto Clemente — one of baseball’s most important figures both on and off the field — played his entire 18-year career in Pittsburgh. His 1955 Topps rookie card is a seven-figure piece in PSA 9. Willie Stargell, Ralph Kiner, Bill Mazeroski, and Barry Bonds (Pirates era, 1986-1992) all produced major rookie cards.
The modern era has produced Andrew McCutchen’s MVP-season cards and, as of 2024, Paul Skenes — the most-hyped pitching prospect since Stephen Strasburg, whose rookie cards have already surpassed early-era Strasburg prices on some parallels.
